Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer Katz and Kevin Lamoureux on the launch of their book "Ensouling Our Schools: A Universally Designed Framework for Mental Health, Well-Being, and Reconciliation" this evening at McNally Robinson Grant Park.
At this evening's launch, Ry Moran, director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, delivered an inspired forward highlighting the importance of reconciliation
Kevin Lamoureux spoke eloquently and passionately about reconciliation as Canada living up to its promise and potential. Kevin also thanked Aboriginal Youth Opportunities (AYO) for their participation in the book, noting the importance of youth voices and remarking that AYO’s participation "makes (him) a better person".
Jennifer Katz highlighted the importance of being an ally, one who walks behind and supports, and noted that this is something she first learned from her mother in the context of the Holocaust. Jennifer also acknowledged her brother Laurence Katz's contributions to the mental health aspect of the book.
The most poignant and powerful moment of the evening, though, was Kevin's daughter explaining why reconciliation is important with the simple, honest answer "for love".
The Honourable Senator Murray Sinclair stated regarding residential schools that ”education has gotten us into this mess, and education will get us out.” Jennifer and Kevin's book presents a practical framework to help educators move towards this goal, and to make schools welcoming, empowering places for students and staff.
"Ensouling our Schools” is available from the publishers, Portage & Main Press, or at McNally Robinson, and many other booksellers.
